What is Poblano Pepper?
The poblano pepper, or ancho pepper, is a mild to medium-hot chilli from Mexico. It is named after the city of Puebla, where it is widely used in traditional Mexican cuisine. Poblano peppers have a distinctive flavour and are valued for their versatility in cooking. Regarding appearance, poblano peppers are dark green, shiny, and slightly wrinkled. They have a medium size, usually 4 to 6 inches long. As the peppers mature, they may turn reddish-brown or dark brown, at which point they are often dried and referred to as ancho peppers.
Poblano peppers have a mild to moderate heat level, typically lower than jalapeños or serranos. The heat can vary from pepper to pepper, with some exhibiting almost no spiciness. Poblano peppers are known for their rich, earthy flavor with subtle fruity notes. They are often described as having a complex taste, blending mild heat with a hint of sweetness.
